The Mercedes-Benz 500E was the flagship of the W124 series, but AMG, at the time an independent tuner, launched an even hotter version of the V8-powered sedan. It was called the E60 AMG and came towards the end of the popular midsize luxury saloon’s life cycle.
Based on the legendary, Porsche-built 500E, it is the Holy Grail of the W124 generation. No one knows exactly how many units AMG built, but the general consensus is that the tuner handcrafted between 100 and 150 examples.

Naturally, the rarity as well as the mystique surrounding this car means it’s also very expensive, as this particular E60 AMG for sale in The Netherlands proves. The Signal Red-painted model with red/black leather-appointed interior and maple wood trim is offered for a whopping €149,500 (approximately $168,000).
It’s hard to believe that a 24-year-old Mercedes-Benz W124 can cost that much but, like we said, this is no ordinary W124. For starters, it’s powered by a naturally aspirated 6.0-liter V8 rated at 381 PS (376 hp) instead of the 500E’s 326 PS (322 hp) 5.0-liter unit.
Besides the more powerful engine, the AMG Technik Packet also includes a stiffer AMG-tuned suspension, 17-inch AMG wheels, an AMG Aero package and an AMG exhaust system.
This particular car comes with features such as air conditioning, cruise control, a power sunroof, Bose sound system, front sports seats (power-adjustable with memory and heating), heated sports rear seats, power windows, electrically adjustable and heated mirrors, Sport and Economy settings for the four-speed automatic transmission, and more.
Back in the day, the E60 AMG was capable of sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.4 seconds and could reach an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). We see no reason why this red example can’t achieve those figures today, particularly since its odometer reads only 71,014 km (44,126 miles).
