Facelifted Mazda2 Bows In Japan With Subtle Styling Changes

The Mazda Demio is no more as the automaker has introduced the facelifted model which will now adopt the Mazda2 moniker in Japan.

Set to go on sale this fall, the car has a revised exterior which strips away “superfluous elements” to reveal a “sculpted form that is simple yet rich.”

While we wouldn’t go that far, the hatchback adopts a new front fascia which echoes the Mazda6. It features a revised grille which is flanked by slimmer headlights. Further below, we can see a new front bumper, a revised air intake and additional chrome trim.

The rest of the car largely carries over, but there’s a modified rear bumper with less plastic body cladding. We can also see new taillights and chrome accents.

The interior is instantly recognizable, but there are new front seats and updated color schemes that “balance quality and playfulness.” Engineers also installed additional sound deadening material, an available auto-dimming rearview mirror and a Mazda Connect infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility.

In terms of safety, Mazda upped its game as the car can now be equipped with lane-keep assist, adaptive LED headlights and an adaptive cruise control system with a stop and go function.

JDM models will be offered with a couple of engines including a 1.5-liter SKYACTIV-G that produces 108 hp (81 kW /110 PS) and 104 lb-ft (141 Nm) of torque. Diesel fans can opt for a 1.5-liter SKYACTIV-D with up to 104 hp (77 kW / 105 PS) and 184 lb-ft (250 Nm) of torque. The engines are paired to six-speed transmissions and a number of trims are available with all-wheel drive.

Sticking with the performance theme, petrol-powered models can now be equipped with the i-Eloop regenerative braking system. The 2020 Mazda2 also features G-Vectoring Control Plus and a retuned suspension that promises to improve ride comfort.

Sales are slated to begin in September and pricing will start at ¥1,544,400.
