Is Porsche Understating The New 911 Carrera S’ Power Figures?

Toyota has recently made headlines for understating the true horsepower and torque of the new Supra. It appears that others might be following the same practice.

Motor Trend recently got its hands on the latest 2019 911 Carrera S and headed to a local tuning shop to strap it onto a dyno and see what it’s capable of.

Porsche claims the car’s 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged flat-six pumps out 443 HP and 390 lb-ft (528 Nm) of torque. Judging by the numbers churned out by the dyno, those figures appear rather conservative.

The publication reports that the new 911 Carrera S produced an average of 414 HP and 406 lb-ft (550 Nm) at the wheels during multiple runs. Taking into account a possible drivetrain loss of 15 per cent, that could mean the Carrera S is in fact delivering around 476 HP and 467 lb-ft (633 Nm) at the crankshaft, but it is hard to determine the exact drivetrain loss of a particular car.

In the not too distant future, Porsche will release a number of new 911 variants that will slot above the Carrera S in its range. We know that a new GT3 is just around the corner, but before it is unveiled, we will probably see the car manufacturer release the new Turbo and Turbo S. Sources tell us they will use an updated version of Porsche’s 3.8-liter twin-turbo flat-six, with over 600 HP for the “base” version and up to 650 HP for the S.
