Ken Block Gets Up Close With The Ford Mustang Shelby GT500

The new Mustang Shelby GT500 is a pretty exciting piece of kit, and Ken Block had the opportunity to get up close with it at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Block is one of Ford’s best-known racing drivers and brought along his insane Hoonitruck to the event. In between runs up the famous British hillclimb, he also had the opportunity to learn about the car with Vaughn Gittin Jr, a drift champion who also knows a thing or two about fast Fords.

Eager to make a statement at Goodwood in a supercar paddock filled with limited-edition supercars and hypercars, the Shelby GT500 Ford brought along was painted in a bright shade of green. It certainly turned heads and not only impressed Block but Gittin Jr. too, who just so happens to own a GT. According to him, the new Mustang GT500 offers a similar driving experience to that mid-engine supercar.

Powering the most powerful street-legal series production Mustang ever is a 5.2-liter supercharged V8 pumping out 760 hp and 625 lb-ft (847 Nm) of torque.

This monster of an engine is mated to a dual-clutch transmission which drives the rear wheels and helps the car sprint to 62 mph (100 km/h) in an impressive 3.5 seconds. The GT500 is also capable of running down the quarter-mile in 10.8 seconds at 131 mph (211 km/h), a mighty impressive time consider it isn’t exclusively a straight-line monster quite like the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and Hellcat Redeye, but, as Ford claims, also sports a nicely sorted chassis ideal for driving enthusiasts.
