Original McQueen-Driven Mustang Bullitt To Be Auctioned In 2020

The original 1968 Ford Mustang Bullitt driven by Steve McQueen will be auctioned off by Mecum at its January 2020 Kissimmee Auction in Florida.

There were just two Mustangs built for the movie, and this particular example was driven by Steven McQueen on countless occasions, including during one particularly famous car chase.

According to the auction house, the car was sold to a private buyer shortly after filming was completed. For 40 years, the car disappeared from sight and many believed it may have been destroyed. However, it re-emerged for the 50th anniversary of the Bullitt at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2018.

The owner, a man by the name of Sean Kiernan, inherited the vehicle from his late father and is bound to make millions from its sale. No official pre-auction estimates have been released just yet but there’s no doubt this will be one of the most expensive Fords ever sold at auction. A Hagerty estimate from 2018 indicated the car was worth about $4 million but we suspect that might be on the conservative side.

Mecum says the 1968 Mustang Bullitt will be exhibited at a number of automotive events across the United States leading up to the January auction. Adding to the car’s desirability is the fact that it remains in its original condition.

The other original Mustang Bullitt was discovered in a scrapyard in Mexico in 2017, where it was almost turned into an Eleanor. This example was used for the various jumping scenes through the movie and while it is not as valuable as the hero car being sold by Mecum, it is still thought to be worth well in excess of $1 million.
