The Porsche 988 Vision Is The Next Mid-Engined Hypercar We Need From Stuttgart

This independent study is dubbed the Porsche 988 Vision and while it may never see the light of day, it does make us wish that Porsche more frequently built mid-engined super / hyper cars.

The most recent production model of the sorts from the German marque was the 918 Spyder, a hybrid hypercar that competed directly against the McLaren P1 and Ferrari LaFerrari. Since then, Porsche has been going against the mid-engine rivals not with separate mid-ship vehicles, but with high-performance versions of the 911 such as the 911 GT2 RS and 911 GT3 RS.

The Porsche 988 Vision, created by designers Colorsponge and Invisive, shows what a new mid-engine supercar from Porsche could look like. We first featured the 988 towards the end of 2018 but in these new renderings, it looks even more spectacular.

It appears as though the Porsche 918 Spyder somewhat inspired the 988 Vision as it has voluptuous front wheel arches and a rounded cabin which is a little different to many of the angular rooflines of other cars competing in this segment.

Elsewhere, the exotic proposal features LED headlights that somewhat mimic the shape of the front air intakes. You may also notice the presence of small rear-view cameras instead of mirrors to help the vehicle slice through the air with as little drag as possible.

There had been reports that Porsche was developing a mid-engined rival to cars such as the McLaren 720S, Ferrari F8 Tributo, and Lamborghini Huracan but as we’ve never seen prototypes, it seems unlikely such a vehicle is in the works.
