These 10 Hillclimb Monsters Show The Importance Of Power And Downforce

There are few production car-based racing cars more extreme than those modified for hillclimb use.

These kind of championships across the world often have very lax regulations and teams and privateer racers are able to create some truly crazy race cars. In the world of hillclimbs, extraordinary power and huge levels of downforce are two of the most important ingredients to success. The cars in this particular video have both those ingredients.

Featured here are the ten fastest entrants from the Osnabruck Bergrennen 2019 hillclimb event in Germany earlier this month. From a 550 hp Subaru Impreza WRX STi that set a best time of 2:05 up the hillclimb through to a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VIII that set the event’s fastest time with a 1:55, there are race cars of all shapes and sizes.

Perhaps the most expensive car featured is a Ferrari 458 GT3 modified for hillclimb racing. It churns out 570 hp from its 4.5-liter naturally-aspirated V8 engine but could only record a best run of 2:02.3 seconds, roughly seven seconds off the pace of the winning Mitsubishi. Another particularly awesome racer is a Renault R.S.01 which recorded a best time of 1:58.9 and was perhaps the best-looking car from the top 10.

As for the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VIII which ran away with the win, its 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine pumps out more than 700 hp. The car also features a towering rear wing as well as aggressive spitters and a bold rear diffuser to stick it to the pavement. It also happens to weigh a mere 1050 kg (2314 lbs). The speed it carries through corners is simply astonishing.
