A look back at Bindi Irwin and Chandler Powell’s six-year romance as they announce their engagement

Bindi Irwin and Chandler Powell thrilled fans when they announced their surprise engagement on her 21st birthday on Wednesday. 

And after six years together, it seems that Bindi and American-born Chandler, 22, truly have shared a modern-day fairytale romance. 

From first meeting at Australia Zoo in 2013 to sending love letters across the ocean, Daily Mail Australia takes a look back at their incredible love story.

The young couple, who describe themselves as ‘soulmates’, first met at Australia Zoo in November 2013.

Chandler, a professional wakeboarder who was visiting from the U.S., went on a guided tour – with Bindi serving as the tour guide. 

Bindi shared a photo of herself with Chandler to Instagram at the time, in which she described him as ‘legendary.’

‘Legendary wakeboarder Chandler Powell and his beautiful family came into Australia Zoo yesterday. Wonderful Wildlife Warriors!’ she wrote in the caption.

Bindi previously told ET that she felt a spark with Chandler from that first meeting.

After she didn’t hear from him for a while, she discovered that he’d actually contacted her mother, Terri Irwin, and asked for her permission to stay in touch. 

‘He sent a letter asking my mom if he could stay in contact with me,’ Bindi said.

Bindi, who is the daughter of late ‘Crocodile Hunter’, Steve Irwin added: ‘And then mom gave the letter to me and said, “Is this person real?”‘

In July 2015, Bindi announced on Instagram that Chandler had become a fully fledged Wildlife Warrior.

For several years, the pair enjoyed a long-distance romance, with Bindi previously saying they exchanged ‘old fashioned’ love letters around this time.

Chandler reportedly moved to live with Bindi in Queensland in 2018.

The Florida-born athlete now works alongside Bindi, her mother Terri, and her brother Robert at Australia Zoo. 

In the November 2018 issue of The Australian Women’s Weekly, Bindi said she felt ‘lucky’ to have found ‘The One.’ 

For months, the pair were the subject of engagement rumours, with fans on social media urging Chandler to propose.

In December, the pair dismissed the speculation, saying they were in no rush to marry.

Bindi told PEOPLE magazine: ‘For us at the moment, I think it’s just been about enjoying life.’ 

Chandler added: ‘It’s really great just to slow down and enjoy the ride.’

The pair delighted fans on Wednesday when they announced their engagement after six years of dating. 

‘On my birthday I said “yes” and “forever” to the love of my life,’ Bindi wrote on Instagram, alongside a photo of her stunning engagement ring.

She added: ‘Chandler, close to six years ago I fell in love with you and every day since has been a whirlwind of adventure and true happiness. 

‘I’m so looking forwarding to spending our forever together as your wife. Here’s to a lifetime of friendship, purpose and unconditional love. Now let’s get married already!’

In a separate Instagram post, Chandler wrote: ‘She said YES. Almost six years ago, we met at Australia Zoo. I immediately fell head over heels for her kind and thoughtful heart that radiates so much light.

‘Proposing in her very favorite place in the zoo, surrounded by animals, seemed like the perfect way to embark on this incredible new chapter in our lives. Bee, I love you more than anything in this world and I always will. Happy Birthday.’
