The Monterey Five return in the second episode of Big Little Lies’ second season, as these women all face new challenges. 

The official description for Sunday night’s episode, Tell-Tale Hearts teases that Renata (Laura Dern) faces an uncertain future when her husband Gordon (Jeffrey Nordling) finds himself in legal trouble.

The official description also teases that Celeste (Nicole Kidman) ‘opens up’ to her mother in law, Mary Louise Wright (Meryl Streep) about her relationship with her late husband Perry (Alexander Skarsgard), while Ed (Adam Scott) confronts his wife Madeline (Reese Witherspoon) about her secrets.

The new episode, Tell-Tale Hearts, begins with Celeste driving, but she is drifting out of consciousness when she gets into a car accident as the airbag goes off.

She tells the cops that she hasn’t been drinking, but they don’t seem to believe her, but Madeline picks her up, telling Celeste that she has to be careful with ambien.

As they drive home, they find Bonnie (Zoe Kravitz) walking on the side of the highway, which leads to an awkward conversation.

Then she asks her to visualize a friend of hers going through the same thing, Madeline, and when she visualizes that, she screams ‘No’ several times, as the therapist asks if she thinks Madeline deserves that.

Renata goes to visit Gordon in jail, who says he’ll be out on bond.

‘I made a big bet to short some stock,’ saying that he knew it was a bust but no one else did, hinting he could be involved in insider trading.

On the car ride home, Celeste says she thinks its best to talk to her, not at school, with her kids saying she likes to pretend that everything is OK.

‘We’re a family, and a family is meant to be open and honest with each other,’ but Max (Nicholas Crovetti) says, ‘I don’t think we’re that kind of family.’    

Back at home, Mary Louise tells Celeste that she didn’t think she could move on, after losing her husband, but she did, for Perry, and Celeste said she would too for the boys.

Celeste says that she heard she had words with Madeline, but she doesn’t like her, adding that she has tried but she’s not a likeable person. 

They start talking more about Madeline but the boys get into a fight outside, which turns quite violent, culminating in Celeste pushing Max, screaming, ‘You will not be like him!’ referring to his violent father Perry.

Back home, Mary says the boys are saying they have a brother, that Perry had with another woman, meaning Jane’s son Ziggy (Iain Armitage).

It seems all of the kids know that Perry is the father of Ziggy, as Jane asks Ziggy about his father, with Ziggy saying that he heard it was Max and Josh’s dad.

Mary Louise says she was planning to leave Perry the very night he died, and that he learned of his infidelity 10 seconds before he died.

Celeste meets with Jane, with Jane saying that she told Ziggy that she was raped, and Celeste is mad, because they had an agreement.

‘I know you have to protect your boys but I have to protect mine. I have to be honest with him,’ Jane says, asking if she’s told her boys about Ziggy.

Renata is driving with Gordon, asking why he did it, and Gordon says he wanted a Gulfstream, which leads her to slap him.

They get into a fight on the road as she pulls over and kicks him out of the car and she takes off, but she turns back around to go get him and he gets back in the car.

Abigail tells Madeline that she would come back if Madeline doesn’t try to get her to go to college, with Abigail mentioning the fact that Madeline was ‘f***ing the theater director,’ although they don’t realize that Ed was watching and heard the whole thing.

When he asks what they meant by ‘f***ing the theater director,’ Madeline says he misheard that, and he goes to leave, saying he’s going to get his ears checked.

Madeline screams, and Abigail tries to apologize, saying that Madeline said he wasn’t home.

Celeste tries to explain to her twins who their father was, saying he wasn’t a bad person.

At the Mackenzie home, Madeline apologizes, saying it had nothing to do with Ed, and the affair was about her, and that she needs to know what he’s thinking.

He’s clearly shook that Madeline told Abigail a year ago that she cheated, but she insists that the youngest daughter Chloe doesn’t know.

‘What’s us? You asked me what I’m thinking, well I’ll tell you. I think we’re done,’ Ed says before storming off.

At Bonnie’s house, her mother Elizabeth is outside on the deck, with Bonnie saying she appreciates her coming, with Elizabeth saying she’s been having visions, and she knows she’s having them too.

‘Somebody’s drowning,’ Elizabeth says. ‘There’s lots of water and somebody’s drowning.’

Bonnie says she doesn’t need her to save her, with Elizabeth saying, ‘What have you done this time?’ 

‘I do want you to go,’ Bonnie says, with Elizabeth responding, ‘I love you too.’

At Jane’s apartment, Ziggy meets the twins, who have gifts for their new brother, while Celeste and Jane share a moment as the kids all laugh.

Madeline sits alone on the pier, reflecting on her mistakes, as the episode comes to an end.

In the preview for next week’s episode, Celeste says if she had to do it again, she wouldn’t lie, while Jane is seen embracing with her co-worker.

Renata asks her husband Gordon, ‘What did I do,’ and he goes back, ‘You tell me,’ with Mary Louise saying that people can move on after a tragedy, but not together.

The preview ends with Mary Louise meeting with Detective Adrienne Quinlan (Merrin Dungey), asking, ‘You don’t think my son really slipped, do you?’

The Season 2 premiere of Big Little Lies was watched by 1.42 million viewers during its live on-air viewing, with 2.5 million viewers total through the HBO GO and HBO Now streaming services.

That figure represented a 34% increase over the series debut in February 2017, which garnered 1.8 million viewers with replays and streaming.
