And just days after Thursday night’s episode was recorded, rumours were rife that Katie was set to quit the show.

A source said at the time: ‘Katie has just been nominated for a British Soap Award so it’s a big loss and not what bosses would have wanted to hear.”

However, Coronation Street bosses insisted the former ‘Waterloo Road’ star is “fully committed” to playing out the rest of her character’s cervical cancer storyline, and say the plot “still has a long way to go”.

A spokesperson said: ‘Katie is fully committed to playing out the extremely important storyline she is currently portraying on screen. This story still has a long way to go. Any speculation threatens to undermine the storyline for viewers.’

In January, Katie admitted her Coronation Street future was “up in the air”.

She said at the time: ‘I’m contracted well into this year but it is up in the air. Although I have to wait and see what happens, I quite like not knowing.

‘With the nature of my storyline, I guess it’s 50/50. Either way I’d be happy, though.’

Earlier this month it was reported that the show has been plunged into crisis, with ‘poor wages and exhausting hours’ to blame for seven cast members quitting the soap in three months.

Sources told The Irish Sun that the recent increase in departures stems from a ‘poisonous atmosphere’ backstage, after Lucy Fallon announced she would be leaving the soap in 2020.

It comes as Lucy joined co-stars Faye Brookes, Kym Marsh and Katie who have decided to leave the soap in the coming months, as they hope to find the same success as ex-stars Michelle Keegan and Katherine Kelly.
