Love Island star Maura Higgins’ secret agony is revealed after her best friend died two years ago

Love Island star Maura Higgins’ mother has revealed that the model battled a secret heartbreak, after her best friend Andrew Rowan was killed in a motorbike accident two years ago.

Following the Irish star’s brief mention that her closest pal ‘was a boy’ on the show, mum Sharon has told the Longford Leader that Maura, 28, was devastated by Andrew’s death, and visited his grave just hours before jetting to Mallorca to appear on the show.

Andrew was killed in July 2017 after his motorbike collided with three cars in Athlone, Co Westmeath, and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency services aged just 26.

Sharon told the publication that Maura’s heartbreak has not completely healed since Andrew’s death, with news of passing rocking the tight-knit community.

She said: ‘That was a very, very tough year for Maura. She really took that hard. 

‘She reckons he’s always going to be her angel. The last thing she did before she left for Love Island was visit Andrew’s grave to speak to him.’

Maura briefly mentioned her friendship with Andrew on Friday’s Love Island, following Anna Vakili’s insistence that ‘guys will never be there for you like girls will.’

The local model responded: ‘Mmm… I disagree… My best friend was a boy.’

Sharon went onto explain that Andrew was a huge inspiration for Maura in the early days of her modelling career, encouraging her to apply for a job with Monster Energy.’

The mum added: ‘”She never thought she’d get it. He said ”of course you will, you’re dynamite, they will love you.” And it was a huge loss when he was killed. He was part of the family and we all loved him.’

Sharon also explained that Maura had been approached by Love Island producers to appear on the show several times, but waited until this year after struggling with her grief following Andrew’s death.

The brunette had posted a tribute to her close friend on Instagram following his death, writing: ‘Words will never ever explain the heartbreak my best-friend, my brother, my rock my world will never ever be the same without you. I Love you maddog @andrewrowan110.’

Maura made her first appearance on Love Island on Wednesday night, where she enjoyed dates with Tommy Fury, 20, Danny Williams, 21, and Michael Griffiths, 27.

The model has clashed with several of the female Islanders after dates with their respective partners, and tried to kiss Tommy in Friday night’s show, to no avail.

Love Island continues on Sunday 16th June at 9pm on ITV.
