From a film critic on ABC to a TV host on SBS, Marc Fennell has interviewed some of the world’s biggest celebrities throughout his fifteen year career.

And the one star that moved Marc to tears is famed children’s author Paul Jennings. 

Speaking to news.com.au on Thursday, the 33-year-old said that it was Paul’s strained relationship with his father that made him cry.

‘He casually mentioned in the interview that his dad didn’t love him,’ Marc said.

‘It was a really raw moment for everyone involved,’ he continued.

‘I still look back at that interview and it moves me tears, because it is so sad that this person that was so instrumental in the childhoods of so many Australian kids.

‘Millions of us were raised with Paul Jennings’ books and the TV show — to know that deep underneath that was a really unhappy childhood broke my heart.’

In the interview, which was filmed in 2017, Paul discussed how tough his father was on him while he was growing up.

‘I don’t think he wanted any competition for my mother,’ the children’s author revealed. ‘I think he particularly didn’t want a little boy.

‘He once told me that I’d never be fit for anything except the workshop. It was sort of the lowest of the low, to him.’

When Marc asked if Paul’s father would be proud of him today after seeing his success as a beloved author, an emotional Paul said he didn’t believe so.

‘No,’ he admitted after some consideration. ‘But my mother would have.’

Paul is one of Australia’s most successful authors, with his books selling over 8 million copies worldwide.
