Michelle Obama inspires Team USA to beat Team UK in James Corden competition

Michelle Obama revealed a hitherto unknown sporting prowess as she guided a star-studded female Team USA to a dodgeball victory over an exclusively male British side on The Late Late Show with James Corden.

Joined by teammates Allison Janney, Mila Kunis, Lena Waithe, Melissa McCarthy and Kate Hudson, the former American First Lady basked in 2-1 win over a UK side featuring Corden, Harry Styles, Benedict Cumberbatch, John Bradley and Reggie Watts.

However the light-hearted sketch was not without casualties, as One Direction star Styles was mercilessly knocked out the game after finding himself on the receiving end of a low shot by Obama.

The singer was unable to move fast enough to prevent being caught, and with the rules stating that any player struck by the ball is automatically out, he had no choice but to leave the court.

However the Brits, whose numbers included Watts despite the comedian being a German born American, appeared gracious in defeat as they passed the time by drinking tea and eating scones.

Dictating the game’s rather basic principles prior to the match, Obama told her assembled teammates: ‘I want you to know that I am proud of each and every one of you.

‘Strength is not measured by how you throw the ball, it is measured in here. When they go low, we also go low, because that’s how Dodgeball works. Am I right?

The star-studded match, which aired on Monday evening, served as a centre-piece in the first of a week of show’s to be filmed in Corden’s native London.

Speaking to CBS This Morning about Obama’s involvement, the presenter admitted he was desperate  to worm with her again after a previous appearance on his Carpool Karaoke.

‘It’s the strangest thing because the former First Lady got in touch with our show and said is there any way we could do something fun, I’d love to film something, I’m gonna be in Los Angeles, and it took us less than point four seconds to go yes we’d love to do that,’ he explained.

‘It’s been a couple of years since did that Carpool Karaoke together and we thought “What would be a good and fun thing to do?”

‘And we sort of came up with an England vs USA game of dodgeball. It’s so gloriously stupid, and we really hope people will enjoy it.’
