When Dr Matt Agnew was announced as Australia’s seventh Bachelor, many fans assumed the handsome astrophysicist had been plucked from obscurity.

But it turns out Matt, 31, was on the producers’ radar for several years, as he was previously invited to appear on The Bachelorette twice.

The Swinburne University researcher told TV Week on Monday that he was almost a contender on Georgia Love and Sophie Monk’s seasons.

He explained: ‘I had applied [for The Bachelorette] in the past, but I was busy so I withdrew due to travel commitments and date clashes.’

Matt added that this process of applying for, and being offered a place on, The Bachelorette happened about ‘two or three years ago’.

This timeline makes sense, as Georgia and Sophie’s seasons were filmed and broadcast in 2016 and 2017 respectively.

Elsewhere in his TV Week interview, Matt confirmed that he did choose a winner in the Bachelor finale, which was filmed in late May.

He said: ‘I’m in love. I would be hard-pressed to say I’ve been this happy before. This is me at my happiest.’

Matt added that he is already planning to start a family with his winning contestant.

‘I’d love to be a young dad,’ he said. ‘It’s something I’m more than happy to get stuck into sooner rather than later.’

Matt follows in the footsteps of previous Bachelors who found love on the show, including Sam Wood, Matty Johnson and Tim Robards.
