Will Karl Stefanovic join Lisa Wilkinson on Channel 10? A TV expert says it could be ratings gold

Despite being sacked as host of the Today show last December, Karl Stefanovic is a man still very much in demand.

So much so that a new report suggests he could rejoin his former Today colleague Lisa Wilkinson on the panel of Channel 10’s The Project.

According to New Idea on Monday, Karl’s fans are eager to see him reunited with Lisa on the nightly current affair program.

TV industry veteran Rob McKnight said that Karl and Lisa’s on-screen chemistry could help lift The Project’s ratings.

‘Securing Karl Stefanovic would show they’re really serious about getting back in the ratings game. He would bring a lot of credibility to whatever show they decided to throw at him,’ said the TV Blackbox editor.

‘Pairing Lisa and Karl together on The Project would be a turning point for the show, and indeed the network. The viewers would absolutely love it!’

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Network Ten for comment.

Despite being unceremoniously axed from the Today show in December last year, Karl, 44, has reportedly not been without job offers.

In May it was revealed that veteran Australian journalist Robert Penfold, 68, was stepping down from his role as Nine’s US bureau chief, sparking rumours that Karl might be up for the coveted gig.

According to Nine News, Robert will finish reporting full-time in July, but will still work part-time with the network after being with Nine for 43 years.

‘I leave with many wonderful memories and experiences and I am thankful for the extraordinary opportunities that the job as Nine’s foreign correspondent provided,’ Robert said in part of a statement as the news broke.

He added: ‘But it is time to take a breather.’

In 2017, a Nine ‘insider’ reportedly told New Idea that Karl was eyeing up Robert’s job.

‘Karl wants (Nine’s US bureau chief) Robert Penfold’s job,’ the source said.

‘He knows he would need to take a pay cut, but would love to relocate to the US as Nine’s correspondent.’

Karl could also switch to a completely different format – from TV to radio.

In April this year,  The Australian reported that the veteran journalist was ‘in talks’ to join the radio station.

Should Karl sign on, he could possibly take over the morning slot at both 2GB and 4BC.
