Pia Miranda has spoken about how she prepared for her latest role as a contestant on Australian Survivor: Champions vs Contenders.

In an interview with Mamamia on Wednesday, the 46-year-old actress said it was important she was physically fit before venturing into the wilderness. 

‘I prepared by just doing lots of physical activity, running, swimming, jumping off high-diving boards and doing lots of yoga,’ she told the publication.

But somewhat surprisingly, Pia said she also tried to gain weight ahead of her appearance on the long-running reality show. 

‘I tried to go in physically fit but then I also tried to put on a bit of weight before I went in so I had a bit to lose,’ she added.

Pia said getting back to basics taught her a few life lessons along the way, and helped her to realise what’s really important.

‘I think as people we’re always looking for something else, or what can I do next and what can I have next,’ she admitted.

‘But what I realised is what I have is perfect and I don’t need anything else.’ 

In an interview with PopSugar on Wednesday, The Looking For Alibrandi actress confessed being away from her children – daughter Lily, eight, and son James, five – was the hardest part of the whole experience.

‘I used to get surprised when people would cry. I’d be like, what’s wrong with you, it’s just a game!’ said the self-confessed fan of the long-running show. 

‘But from day one it’s like you’re cold, you’re hungry and you don’t know when you’re going to see your family again, so your emotions become really raw. 

‘I think that’s what mainly surprised me, the fact I thought I was a lot tougher than I clearly am.’
