Trudie Horskins had hopes of making the Australian Ninja Warrior finals during Sunday night’s episode.

Her sneaker slammed into the edge of the black mat and bounced off her foot and into the water below.

According to the rules of the show, if any part of a contestant or their equipment  – even a hair clip – falls off into the water, they are disqualified.

The Victorian athlete said afterwards: ‘I’m devastated. I’m so devastated. I wanted this so bad. I had this course tonight. I had it wrapped up. It was in here. I was ready to go.’

She added: ‘I was so focused, and, oh, far out, to finish like that, with a shoe, far out! It was on so tight. Double knot.’

And fans watching at home were less than impressed as well, with some calling the rule ‘stupid’.

One person wrote:  ‘Who cares if her shoe came off, what a stupid rule!’

Another Tweeted: ‘What crap that #ninjawarriorau is. Lose a shoe and it falls in the water and it’s a DQ? Get f**ked.’

One more chimed in comically: By all means disqualify the shoe…. the shoe screwed up not her’.

Yet another fan concluded: ‘Does she really think if her shoe didn’t fall in that she was going to make it… did she really think she would be a shoo-in?’
