Awkwafina is taking Hollywood by storm with her first lead role, which happens to also be her first dramatic role.

The 30-year-old actress and rapper stars in the critically-acclaimed family drama The Farewell, which is now in theaters.

And to promote the new film, the Crazy Rich Asians star appeared on the Today Show where she brought on stage her grandmother.

She told hosts Savannah Guthrie and Jenna Bush Hager that the role particularly resonated with her, as she was raised by her own grandmother.

She said: ‘My relationship is very personal. I was raised by my grandma, my mom passed when I was four years old.

‘I think, as an Asian-American in this country, Billi’s struggle is very relatable. I knew that I related to it very personally, but then I didn’t know that other people would relate to it.’

Under the jacket, she color-blocked with a bold orange ribbed sweater, tucked into the pants.

She completed the pink vision with a pair of strappy pointed heels and some hoop earrings under her long loosely curled black hair.
