Highly privileged students go head to head in the dramatic trailer for new Netflix series The Politician.

Judging by the action-packed clip, fans can expect lots of glamour and bad behaviour from the Ryan Murphy series when it streams September 27.

The storyline centers around Payton Hobart (played by Dear Evan Hansen’s Ben Platt), who is determined to become the president of the United States.

But before the White House he needs to conquer his Santa Barbara high school’s election for Student Body President.

In the trailer which dropped on Monday, Payton makes his unstoppable intentions clear to his classmates as he says: ‘I’m merely stating a fact, I will be president some day. I’m warning you, do not screw with my dream’

He’s also seen announcing his running mate to a crowd of high schoolers, ‘I’m proud to introduce my running mate today, Infinity Jackson’

But it’s not long before his campaign starts to implode as he discovers his running mate used a gay slur in footage unearthed online.

‘So evidently there’s videotape with some footage of you using an offensive gay slur, do you have any idea what I might be referring to?’ Payton demands as he confronts Infinity at her home in the middle of the night.

‘She called an obviously gay reporter ‘butt-munch’,’ his campaign team informs him.

‘Dammit! This is all over now.’ Payton says storming off into the night.

Payton finds himself up against Astrid, a particularly aggressive opponent played by Lucy Boynton (Bohemian Rhapsody).

‘This school deserves better than you,’ Astrid tells Payton during what appears to be a debate on stage in front of their classmates.

‘Your ambition frightens me,’ she is seen saying cautiously as she hugs her son.

Meanwhile, Astrid’s father (Dylan McDermott) tells her after a game of tennis: ‘You wanna beat him, you need to embrace your inner coldness, unapologetically.’

Jessica Lange also stars, playing the grandmother of Payton’s running mate Infinity (Zoey Deutch), who appears to be plotting Payton’s demise in one scene.

Murphy teamed up with his Glee co-creators Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan for The Politician, marking his first show to land at Netflix.

He has several other projects in the works for the platform since signing a landmark $300 million deal with streamer in February 2018.
