He said: ‘It hasn’t been easy. To think I’ve been perceived in that was just heartbreaking. It wasn’t nice to see.

‘But how the show works if I was to be [controlling] I would have been kicked out. I wasn’t like that at all. I always kept the best intentions at heart and I tried to do what I thought was right’.

The sandwich delivery man was ejected from the villa on Tuesday night’s show amid a flurry of complaints to TV watchdog Ofcom after viewers accused him of ‘gaslighting’ surfer and model Lucie Donlan, 21, during their romance.

Joe’s relatives and friends expressed their concerns the footage had been ‘unfairly’ edited by producers to portray him in a negative light, claims which Caroline appeared to throw her support behind by ‘liking’ the Instagram post.

A Love Island spokesperson denied the claims footage was edited unfairly, saying: ‘What airs on Love Island is a fair and accurate representation of what happens in the villa.’
