Following close behind was actor Joaquin Phoenix, who takes on the iconic role of The Clown Prince Of Crime in the film.

The acclaimed actor, 44, looked dapper in a black tuxedo as he walked the red carpet solo after attending the Hollywood Foreign Press Association cocktail reception with fiancée Rooney Mara earlier in the day.

Joker swapped the famous tagline of the Gotham City clown-inspired psychopathic mastermind from ‘why so serious’ to ‘put on a happy face.’

The movie is a new take on the famed portrayals, with origin tale contrasting to slick Jared Leto’s slick version in David Ayer’s 2016 Suicide Squad or Heath Ledger’s wild Oscar-winning turn in Christopher Nolan’s 2008 The Dark Knight.

Joaquin, 44, is the seventh actor to take on the Jester of Genocide and he ‘lost a considerable amount of weight in preparation.’

‘It feels unique, it is its own world in some ways, and maybe, mostly, it scares the f***ing s*** out of me or something. It might as well be the thing that scares you the most,’ the three-time Oscar nominee told Collider back in July.

Twitter was flooded with praise for the trailer, with devoted fans writing: ‘Oh this looks fabulous and Phoneix looks like the joker should demented and crazy.
