Genie Francis EXCLUSIVE: The General Hospital star, 56, on Mother’s Day

Genie Francis has the perfect advice for moms this Mother’s Day, which falls on Sunday.

The 56-year-old beauty – who is best known for playing Laura on General Hospital off and on since 1977 – talked exclusively to DailyMail.com about how she looks at the annual holiday.

‘I think the best thing about motherhood is self-forgetting,’ said the NutriSystem spokesperson. ‘You get yourself out of the way, and you think of your kids more than you think of yourself, and that’s a tremendous relief, I think.’

The TV star added, ‘And then, of course, I think the coolest thing about a child is that it’s like a gift that keeps opening, because at every stage the child is different. Even into adulthood.’

The blonde beauty has been wed to 66-year-old Star Trek actor Jonathan Frakes since 1988.

Together they have 21-year-old daughter Elizabeth and 24-year-old son Jameson.

She also said she loves to be with family on Mother’s Day.

‘My favorite way to spend Mother’s Day is at home with my kids,’ said the actress, who has also worked on The Young And The Restless.

‘Don’t go to a restaurant because that will be a nightmare.’

As far as her favorite meals she said she likes an outdoor dinner: ‘I like to barbecue, and spend time with the kids.’

Francis also revealed to DailyMail.com a gift her two kids presented her with.

‘It’s a swing, which I love having a rope swing,’ says the Port Charles star.

‘We have one in our house in Maine, and I really wanted one here, and so on Mother’s Day my children went out with me to the lumber yard and building supply, and they made this swing for me.

‘And then it was very nerve wracking because they actually – my daughter – climbed up the tree, all the way up there and tied them on.

‘We tried throwing them over, that wasn’t working, and my sweet daughter who’s afraid of nothing went all the way up there, and my son sort of engineered the whole thing. So, this is my Mother’s Day swing from my children.’

In October she told TV Insider she has a new pad.

‘I have a new home that I’ve been busy working on and doing major renovations. I went back doing something I love to do. I’ve been busy with painting, knitting, walking my dogs, visiting friends and doing regular life stuff, which I really do enjoy!’ she shared.

The star is also known for her 30lb weight loss thanks to NustriSystem.

She had struggled with her weight her whole life and ‘almost lost hope’ until she signed with the brand she told ABC News.

‘I wasn’t sure I would be able to do it. I thought, “Maybe this is it.” I’m older now.’

Then someone suggested she try Nutrisystem.

‘When they first introduced this program to me, I said, Oh, this isn’t going to work for me. It’s way too much food. I can’t lose weight eating that much food,’ she recalled.

Swinging: 'We have one in our house in Maine, and I really wanted one here, and so on Mother's Day my children went out with me to the lumber yard and building supply, and they made this swing for me.' she added

After week one she was down five pounds.

‘I couldn’t believe it,’ she said. ‘I was getting so much delicious food. I did not feel deprived. The diet is very gentle. I find that as I’m getting older, I can’t do these crazy extreme things anymore. I have to have something that’s easy, livable. I’m not willing to be miserable.’

She then became a Nutrisystem spokeswoman.

When her sister, Shelley, died in June 2013 she struggled again.

‘After the loss of my sister, I began to turn to food for comfort and made little time for my own needs,’ Francis said. ‘I had reached a weight I could not have imagined.

‘I’ve always been an emotional eater,’ she continued. ‘That’s my go-to when I’m feeling uncomfortable inside of my own skin. It’s been an ongoing problem in my life.’

But she bounced back.

‘All the other diets I’ve done all my life have taught me how to starve, how not to eat,’ she said. ‘It was all or nothing. The big thing with Nutrisystem, it’s teaching me how to eat.’

She said, ‘The more I eat a balanced diet, the less vulnerable I am to those trigger foods…because I’m not miserable and starving.’
