Halsey jokes that she’s having an ‘existential crisis’ over Black Mirror’s episode starring Miley Cyrus as singer is convinced the story is about her

Miley Cyrus returned to the world of acting when she took on the world of global pop star Ashley O for Black Mirror’s fifth season.

But it seems that fellow musician Halsey, 24, thinks the story could be about her, as she joked with fans via Twitter on Thursday that she was having an ‘existential crisis’ over the episode.

The episode Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too saw the former Hannah Montana star portray a troubled singer whose music output is being monitored by her menacing aunt and music manager.

Halsey, whose real name is Ashley Frangipane, appeared to be convinced the story was about her, as she wrote: ‘Black Mirror episode about a pop star named Ashley with colorful hair. Existential crisis: Engage.’

Discussing her thoughts about the episode with fans, Halsey informed them that her real name was Ashley and she joked that if she ‘died they killed me’.

Despite Halsey’s claims, showrunners Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones previously confirmed that they were looking for ‘someone like Miley’ as they didn’t think they would be able to get the real singer on board.

And TMZ reported that they had seem emails between production executives about the episode, and claimed Brooker was ‘only vaguely aware’ of Halsey.

Speaking in an interview with Radio Times earlier this month, Brooker and Jones said they found it ‘bizarre and quite surreal’ that Miley agreed to join the show, because they sent the script to her on a whim as they were looking for a ‘Miley Cyrus type’ and felt ‘there [was] nothing to lose’.

Charlie explained: ‘We thought, “We’re obviously not going to get Miley Cyrus — but there’s nothing to lose by sending her the script.”

‘We sent her the script, it turned out she’d seen the show, and liked it, and then we got word back pretty quickly she was interested, and then we all hopped on a Skype call, which was bananas.’

The screenwriter added that Miley’s ‘self-deprecating’ attitude and ‘good sense of humour’ meant she was keen to give her own suggestions for the story, and quickly said ‘she wanted to do it.’

The episode is inspired by Charlie’s children and their reaction to the Amazon Echo he bought for the house, as he found it ‘creepy’ how they would be ‘talking to this thing like it’s a person.’

It follows lonely teenager, Rachel, as she buys an Alexa-style voice activated doll of her favourite pop-star, longing to live the rosy life she thinks Ashley does.
