House Rules regularly sees some high stress moments.
And Sunday night’s episode was no exception, with contestants Shayn and Carly seeing tempers flare with rival team, Katie and Alex.
Carly was already left reeling after a ‘zone swap’ saw her and Shayn given the dreaded entry, hallway and laundry of the competition’s latest renovation.
‘We’re not trying to make you angry’: House Rules’ Shayn and Carly (R) see tempers flare with rivals Katie and Alex (L) following a surprise ‘zone swap’ which put them on the backfoot
The face-off started while Alex and Katie were negotiating space for the kitchen with Melbourne dancers, Pete and Courtney, who were tasked with this week’s en suite.
While Alex and Katie proved easy to wrangle some space off for the Melbourne couple, the seemingly smooth interaction soon set Carly off.
‘Just remember, we have a hall and an entry and we don’t have much else to do right now,’ she raged, clearly frustrated at the gathered group.
Space: The fracas started over Alex negotiating with team mates Courtney and Pete, who were needed extra space for their en-suite transformation
Alex attempted to try and calm the situation: ‘Carly, we aren’t trying to get you angry,’ he said, with Courtney chiming-in: ‘It’s started.’
A stern-faced Carly continued: ‘I know you guys have stuff to do and so do we. We can’t just stand here and do nothing.’
Katie also attempted to cool Carly down: ‘Let them do their thing. We’ll do our thing. Then we’ll come and talk [as a group],’ she said.
‘I know you guys have stuff to do and so do we. We can’t just stand here and do nothing’ Carly raged at Alex (R) and Katie (L), who both tried to diffuse the situation
With the tension in the group building, Carly became increasingly agitated as her rivals tried to resolve the impasse.
‘I just don’t want you to go down a track [then have to change it],’ Alex said, to which Carly replied icily: ‘I need to know where to start.’
Alex attempted to defuse the situation, trying to help Shayn and Carly map out their zone as best as he could, but Shayn didn’t seem too impressed.
‘At the end of the day it’s our wall as well. I’ll just put our tape down and we’ll work around it,’ Shayn said, going on to hint that he and Carly are the outsiders in the group.
‘Alex is trying to work out his wall. But at the end of the day it’s our wall as well. I’ll just put our tape down and we’ll work around it,’ he said.
In a piece-to-camera afterwards, Alex was compassionate towards Carly, who was given the traditionally low-scoring rooms this week.
‘Poor old Carls is stressed. I can feel that. I think I just have to treat her with kid gloves today,’ he said, appearing to brush off her bad behaviour.
However, Shayn appeared to hint that the other teams have bonded and that he and Carly remain outsiders: ‘If you’re in you’re in. If you’re out, you’re out,’ he said.
Competitive: Melbourne brothers Tim and Mat (pictured) got to do the zone swap due to their great performance on the leader-board last week
Elsewhere, Shayn and Carly were left visibly annoyed after a surprise ‘zone swap’ saw Melbourne brothers Tim and Mat forcibly trade their rooms.
Shayn once again believed the move was strategic.
‘I think Tim and Mat have left the others (Alex and Katie and Pete and Courtney) out so they can be taken into the next round,’ Shayn said.
‘I suppose they see us as the biggest threat. They probably see themselves as beating Lisa and Andy. So we have a target on our back,’ he finished.
