Iggy Azalea has defended her ‘sickening’ In My Defense album artwork.

In the shocking imagery, the Australian rapper appears to have been shot dead as she poses with her brains splattered against a car.  

After sharing the extremely graphic visuals to Twitter on Tuesday morning, the 29-year-old explained the concept is a ‘statement’ for women.

Iggy said: ‘It’s a statement about women not having the ability to defend themselves under public gaze, not rebirth.’

However, the controversial photoshoot received a mixed response from followers on social media, with some branding the artwork ‘sickening’. 

‘Please don’t hate me but I don’t like it, you look dead,’ tweeted one to Iggy.

Another wrote: ‘I like it but not shot dead Iggy please, drunk maybe not shot dead.’

Addressing the overwhelming praise, Iggy later tweeted: ‘I’m so happy you love the cover as much as I do! I can’t wait till you see how pretty it looks in real life.’ 

The album’s front cover features a wide shot of the graphic scene, with Iggy propped up against the vehicle in an empty car park.

A pool of blood is seen around her, as Iggy posed with the deep red substance covering her hands and head, which is caved in.
