‘I’m not sure it’s worth much anyway’: Gold Logie-winning actor John Wood hits out at the ‘joke’ industry award in support of its controversial 2019 winner Tom Gleeson
Former Gold Logie winner John Wood has hit out at the top industry award and insisted it ‘hasn’t helped’ his career since he was awarded it in 2006.
The veteran actor, 73, questioned the award’s worth in an interview with Confidential, where he refused to criticise this year’s winner Tom Gleeson.
Instead he pointed out that Gleeson is a comedian and appeared to agree with the Hard Quiz host’s controversial acceptance speech, in which he branded the Gold Logie a ‘joke’, in jest.

‘I’m not going to bag [Tom], it’s what he does,’ John claimed, before adding: ‘I’m not sure how much a Gold Logie is worth anyway.’

His comments come after Gleeson, 45, caused a stir within the TV industry by branding the Gold Logie a ‘joke’ in his acceptance speech at the 2019 awards.
In his eight-minute long speech, Tom mocked his fellow Gold Logie candidates who had sincerely campaigned for the coveted award.
He insisted his victory was a win for ‘taking the p**s’ and ‘not giving a s**t’, while branding everybody that works in television and chasing a Gold Logie a ‘w****r’.

Tom said: ‘There has been a lot of concern that I’m turning this award into a joke. But what you are forgetting is I’m a comedian. I love jokes.
‘This award for me represents a joke, but I love jokes. I really enjoy them. I really think we should all lighten the f**k up.’
Gold Logie nominee Amanda Keller has since been very vocal about Tom’s speech and slammed the stand-up comic for belittling the Gold Logie’s worth.
Speaking on Jonesy & Amanda, she said: ‘[I have] no problem with Tom, but it gave everyone permission to say, “Yeah, you’re all up yourself, this is all a big joke.”‘
‘It wasn’t a joke to me. I don’t know why we’re embarrassed in television to be proud of our work.’
