Kristen heaped praise on Michael, saying: ‘He empowers people so well. He makes you feel like you belong there and he sets a tone that makes everything work in this joyful manner because everyone feels included.’

At one point during the discussion, she was close enough to crying that an audience member handed her some tissues for her eyes.

‘Our focus when we drive through the gates is to live up to the material,’ explained Ted, according to a report in Deadline.

‘We got exactly the story we wanted to tell under the wire,’ Michael said of the series, which began airing on NBC back in 2016.

‘At the beginning, I pitched [The Good Place] as an investigation of what it means to be a good person. That’s an even more complicated question than I thought it was.’

Michael went on: ‘The newfound belief about being good is that you’re trying. As long as you’re trying, you’re on the right path.’

When asked about the evolution of the show over its four seasons, and what it means to be a good person, Schur elaborated:

‘What we found as we discussed it and wrote it and executed it is that some very, very smart people over the last 3000 years have had a lot of very different opinions about that question,’ he said according to Slashfilm.com

‘The mission of the show then became was to say okay, we’re going to give you a bunch of options. You can be a good person this way, try to be a good person this way or this way. What we ended up saying is we’re going to present a bunch of options, and there are plenty more we didn’t describe, but what’s important is that you try one of them. That was my internal shift over the course of making the show.’

The Good Place stars Kristen as a dishonest and conniving person who dies and mistakenly ends up in a positive version of the afterlife.

In order to avoid winding up in perdition, she has to keep up the delusion that she was a decent human being in life and is one now.
