The media’s fixation with the lovebirds began soon after their first red carpet appearance in 2015, following Bindi’s appearance on Dancing with the Stars.

Australian magazine New Idea has been particularly invested in the pair’s love story, having featured them on the cover countless times.

One cover from 2016 announced that Bindi’s late father Steve would be ‘so proud’ after they supposedly married in a ‘surprise wedding’.

The magazine ran a similar cover the following year, announcing (incorrectly) that the couple were engaged and that Steve would have been delighted.

American publications such as OK! and Globe have also written articles about Bindi and Chandler’s ‘dream wedding Down Under’ – and even suggested that she would have a ‘double wedding’ with her mother Terri Irwin, who has not publicly dated anyone since Steve’s death in September 2006.

There has been much speculation as to where the couple’s wedding would take place, with publications variously suggesting Australia Zoo, a beach in Byron Bay and a church in Eugene, Oregon.

The magazine also alleged that Bindi and Chandler had made several ‘secret visits’ to the church in Eugene in preparation of their ‘big day’.

In 2016, it was suggested that Russell Crowe had offered to walk Bindi down the aisle at her wedding, but he has yet to comment on the rumours.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Russell Crowe’s management for comment.

Steve Irwin, famously known as the ‘Crocodile Hunter’, died from fatal stingray barb to the heart while filming a documentary in Batt Reef in 2006. He was 44 years old.

His widow, Terri, has never remarried.

She tweeted her excitement about Bindi’s engagement on Wednesday, writing: ‘Best day ever! Chandler asked and beautiful Bindi said yes.

‘I am so very happy, and I know Steve would be too. Congratulations!’
