‘None of that rubbish!’ MasterChef judge Gary Mehigan loses his temper at contestant Tim Bone after he fails to properly prepare a jus before the show’s first dinner party
MasterChef judge Gary Mehigan, 52, rarely raises his voice at the amateur chefs on Channel 10’s popular cooking show.
But during Wednesday’s episode of the Channel 10 show, Gary appeared to lose his temper with contestant Tim Bone.
Yelling across the busy kitchen, Gary demanded that Tim return to his station so he could show him how he had failed to properly prepare vegetables for his jus.
‘None of that rubbish’: MasterChef judge Gary Mehigan lost his temper at contestant Tim Bone after he failed to properly prepare a jus on Wednesday night’s episode
Tim appeared frantic as he scattered about the kitchen, but Gary was not impressed by his quick attempt to cut corners with his dish for the show’s first dinner party.
As Tim’s beef bones were caramelising in the pan with vegetables, onions, carrots, garlic and celery, Gary demanded Tim stop what he was doing.
Gary took aim at Tim’s jus, saying it needed to be packed with flavour to impress the mystery guests who would soon be seated for service.
‘Tim, get here’: Gary (R) had a number of tense words for Tim (L) with him clearly unhappy with how Tim was preparing his jus
‘The skin, no,’ Gary said, lifting up one of the large vegetable chunks on the board.
Waving his finger at Tim, Gary added, ‘clean, yeah? None of that rubbish!’ with Tim appearing to listen carefully during the tense exchange.
Gary then told Tim to compare his chopped-up produce with his own boiling jus on the stovetop, noting he was obviously making too much for the service.
Trouble: Tim appeared shy during the tense conversation with Gary
‘Flavour and rubbish,’ he said, pointing from dish to dish as a clear comparison of the right and wrong way of doing things.
Earlier on in the segment, Gary had been angered at Tim for the amount of jus he was making and was worried he was being careless with the cooking portions.
‘Tim, stop what you’re doing,’ Gary said forcefully.
Rubbish: Gary criticised the amount and size of the ingredients for the jus: ‘How much source are you making?’ with Tim having clearly made a lot more than what was needed
Getting it right! Gary demonstrated how the ingredients needed to be sliced in order to make a jus that was full of flavour. Here showing Gary’s example
Tim reflected on the incident: ‘Gary wants me to have a bit more finesse with the sauce. It’s not just about throwing things in there and hoping for the best.’
‘I really have to think things through. Chop things a lot smaller. And really take care of the sauce,’ he added.
‘I know Gary is being really tough on me with this jus, but in a restaurant setting perfection is key and Gary knows what he’s talking about!’ Tim conceded.
Calm: Gary (L) is known of the more mild-mannered judge on MasterChef. Pictured here with co-stars Matt Preston (M) and George Calombaris (R)
