MasterChef viewers have mercilessly mocked George Calombaris over a 2017 scandal in which he was accused of underpaying his staff.

The jokes rolled in after Channel 10 aired a preview for Wednesday night’s episode of MasterChef, which saw the contestants tasked with preparing the last ever dinner for George’s now defunct restaurant, The Press Club, on the eve of its official closure.

Viewers flocked to Twitter to joke about the celebrity chef using the MasterChef challenge as a way to get people to cook in his restaurant for free.

His company, Made Establishment, were found to owe $2.6 million in unpaid wages to staff. 

The business, which confirmed the underpayments through internal and external analysis, put the matter down to ‘historically poor processes’.

George told staff he was ‘devastated by what had happened’ and ‘was so sorry we have messed up and let you down’.

‘We received a heads-up from FWO [Fair Work Ombudsman] more than 18 months ago, which should have resulted in us fixing our systems sooner,’ George said in an email to staff in 2017.

‘Regrettably, our attention to detail at that time wasn’t at a level it should have been but we now have a CEO and Human Resources Manager in place, supported by good processes and systems to properly support the business.

‘We are truly sorry for the impact this has had on our incredibly hard-working, talented and dedicated staff.’
