This year’s party pavilion was designed by Japanese architect Junya Ishigami, 45, and is made out of 62 tonnes of Cumbrian slate shaped into a flowing mound.
Despite its distinct design, Ishigami told The Guardian that he took inspiration from the Japanese garden concept of shakkei, or borrowed scenery.
He said: ‘I wanted to create a pavilion that felt primitive and ancient. Something between building and landscape.
‘Slate roofs are found all over the world, so anyone coming here will be able to identify with it as a basic, archetypal form.’

Each year an architect is selected to design the famous Serpentine Pavilion, and Tim Leigh, marketing director for Stage One, the fabricators who have created the pavilion every year for the last decade, said this year’s creation was the toughest yet. It was really, really difficult this year.
‘Ishigami is the most conceptual architect we have ever worked with. It was a very strained process’, he explained.
Last year’s summer bash proved to be a lavish affair, as it was hosted by Chanel, Yana Peel, Hans Ulrich Obrist and Adwoa Aboah.
The fashionable occasion saw food aplenty with some guests dining on cod and courgette flowers at Coco’s, Chanel’s restaurant within the gardens, with menus illustated by Fin Fellowes.
Other attendees tucked into the quinoa-and-salmon poke bowls that were on offer, along with gelato by Joyce Wang.
Chic star Nile Rodgers also took to the specially designed stage last year with a stellar performance for the guests.
British designers Erdem Moralioglu, Emilia Wickstead, and Alice Temperley danced up a storm to Le Freak, and all guests also left with an exclusive illustration by late designer Karl Lagerfeld.
