Sheridan Smith reveals anxiety battle left her ‘screaming on the inside’ and spiralled after her father’s death

Sheridan Smith revealed her anxiety battle left her ‘screaming on the inside’ and nearly destroyed her BAFTA-winning acting career.

The actress, 37, admitted she ‘couldn’t cope’ when her late dad Colin was diagnosed with cancer while she was juggling playing the lead role in the musical Funny Girl.

Speaking to The Telegraph‘s Stella magazine, the West End star explained she was under a lot of pressure when people expected to hear how happy she was because her acting career was flourishing but in reality she felt ‘lonely and scared’.

Sheridan told the publication: ‘All people wanted to hear was how happy I was that I was doing so well, but inside I was just screaming. I thought everyone could see I wasn’t right.’

During the 2016 run of Funny Girl, she missed curtain calls and the show’s promoters blamed her behaviour on ‘technical difficulties’.

Speculation was rife that the award-winning actress was drunk on stage which she has always vehemently denied.

Her anxiety spiraled out of control when her beloved father Colin passed away aged 80 at the end of 2016.

The musical theatre star explained it ‘killed’ her that she couldn’t talk to anyone about how she really felt.

‘I felt so lonely and scared a lot of the time and it killed me. I felt I couldn’t actually say that to anyone because no one wanted to hear it.’
