Sadie Sink’s Stranger Things character Max Mayfield went through a number of hardships in the show’s third season.

But the most difficult thing the actress, 17, had to deal with was keeping the show’s plot twists a secret while promoting the show, especially when it came to her character’s brother Billy (Dacre Montgomery).

Discussing how she struggled to talk about his dark, dramatic arc in the new season with Teen Vogue on Wednesday, Sadie explained: ‘It was really hard not to say anything about Billy [in interviews].

‘Even now, just saying that right there, I still got nervous. I’m still not used to being able to talk about it openly.’

Billy, who was the bad boy of season two, took centre stage in the third season after the malevolent entity known as the Mind Flayer took over his body so that it could get its revenge on Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown).

In an action-packed finale, the whole gang teamed up to defeat the creature at the Battle of Starcourt Mall, where Billy managed to overcome the being’s mind-control powers to fight it, and protect Eleven, sacrificing himself in the process.

Max comforts her brother in his dying moments, and while it is sad Sadie feels this is an important part of her character’s arc: ‘I think it makes sense for her, because that’s kind of as messed up as their relationship was. [Billy’s death] still really affects the dynamic within her family.

‘But in true Max fashion, she’s not going to let anyone see how she’s really feeling at some points.

‘You see her just pretending that everything’s fine, when really, everything’s changed for her. She’s in a completely different emotional headspace.’

Another great part of the season was the budding friendship between Max and Eleven, whose bond grew after the latter starting having problems with boyfriend Mike (Finn Wolfhard).

Giving a tongue-in-cheek response, Sadie said: ‘Though Max may be corrupting her in some ways, I think the overall friendship between the two was what the show really needed.’

Netflix have yet to confirm if they will renew the hit sci-fi series for another season.
