He was nominated for Most Popular New Talent at the Logie Awards last year, but lost out to comedian Dilruk Jayasinha.
And Matty Johnson has now confessed that he thought he was going to win the coveted trophy and was almost caught on camera leaving his seat for the stage.
Speaking on Nova FM’s breakfast show on Saturday, The Bachelor star, 31, explained a hot tip from Osher Gunsberg during the ceremony left him extremely red-faced.
Awkward! Matty Johnson has confessed he thought he was going to win a Logie at last year’s awards and was almost caught on camera leaving his seat for the stage
Matty revealed that Bachelor host Osher explained to him it is easy to tell who has won their category because the cameras position themselves in front of that person.
He said: ‘I was there nominated and I think it was Osher who came up to me, obviously my first Logies, I was very green.
‘He went, “Hey Matt, I’ll give you a little hot tip, when your category is called, you will know if you’re the winner because they will have a camera crew come right up to you and start filming you when they start calling out the nominees.”‘
Oops: Speaking on Nova FM’s breakfast show, the Bachelor star said he was left embarrassed when he realised camera crews were actually filming winner Dilruk Jayasinha who was sat next to him
Matty explained that he and Dilruk had been sitting next to each other at the awards and were both nominated for the same category.
‘When they started calling out names, a camera crew came right up, shone a light in my face, started filming me,’ Matty told his radio co-hosts.
His fiancee Laura Byrne was sat on the other side of him at the ceremony and Matt revealed: ‘I poked Laura and I said, “Babe I think I’m about to win.”‘
Nominee: Matty was nominated in 2018 for Most Popular New Talent at the Logie Awards following his appearance on The Bachelor in 2017
‘I had no speech, nothing planned, all of a sudden nerves just hit me, I was shaking going, “I’ll thank my mum, I’ll thank channel Ten”, I was literally about to get out of my seat to walk up and it was Dilruk, Dilruk had won,’ he confessed.
Matty claimed he was ‘so close’ to snapping up a Logie, while radio presenter Matt De Groot was left amused and told his pal it would have been ‘amazing’ if he had got up and started making his way to the stage.
Reality star Matty’s confession comes as Australia’s TV stars are preparing for this year’s Logie Awards that will take place on Sunday at The Star on the Gold Coast.
