The Kitchen’s Katie Lee details infertility struggles… and how she ‘prayed for two little embryos’

The Kitchen co-host Katie Lee expanded upon her heart-wrenching April 24 Instagram post about her difficulties conceiving through in vitro fertilization (IVF) with husband Ryan Biegel.

The 37-year-old Daytime Emmy nominee detailed how ‘elated’ she initially felt when the doctor was able to successfully retrieve six eggs during surgery.

‘From ultrasounds, we thought there were only four, so it was a big win. But then the emotional roller coaster began,’ the West Virginia-born chef wrote in her People essay on Wednesday.

‘The next day a nurse called to let me know that two of the eggs were immature, two did not fertilize, but the remaining two did. We had two embryos. Now it was time to wait. Embryos need three to five days before they can either be transferred back into the uterus or frozen for later use.

‘I prayed and prayed those two little embryos would be healthy. But on day five, we got the call: neither embryo survived. I hung up the phone and sat on the floor and cried. I did everything right. How, after all of that, could I be left with nothing? We were filled with so much hope and excitement, only to be crushed.’

Katie – who had openly discussed her desire for a family back in October – was hurt by the ‘endless’ comments and messages from her captive, combined 687K social media following.

‘[They were all] asking variations of the same question: Are you pregnant yet? Why not? When? “Katie, where is your baby bump?” wrote one person,’ Lee recalled.

‘I’d get comments that I looked like I’d gained weight…They weren’t wrong; I had gained weight. I wasn’t able to exercise, and all of the hormones made me bloated…It’s not okay to comment on a woman’s body, ever. You never know what someone is going through.’

On the other end of the spectrum, the Miami University grad was lifted up by hearing about other women’s struggles with infertility.

‘I think we breathed a collective sigh of relief together. There is a comfort in knowing you are not alone,’ the Easy-Breezy Eats author wrote.

‘I know a family will happen for us; it’s just not going to be as easy as we thought. We will keep working towards it. Someday we will have our happy new beginning. And I pray any of you experiencing the same will have yours too.’
