‘And I think as long as it’s done in a way where the woman is the focus, rather than male-gazing or sexualising a female, it can be very empowering,’ Zendaya added.

The former Disney star went on to say that she considers her character Rue like ‘a little sister’.

‘Maybe she’s like a little sister to me and she’s someone I want to protect. I want her to make the right decisions.’

Euphoria follows a group of high school students, dealing with a world of sex, drugs and social media.

Zendaya plays Rue, an androgynous character who just completed a stint in rehab.

During a frank talk with Paper magazine this month, Zendaya confessed to knowing several teens who are experiencing the same issues.

‘The show to me is not that shocking. I know a lot of 17-year-olds that are going through this,’ she said.

Social media plays a huge role in the show as an avenue for the characters to build a community and find potential romantic partners.

Rue is a huge advocate for sexting as she says in the series: ‘Nudes are the currency of love, so stop shaming us. Shame the a**holes who create password-protected online directories of naked underage girls.’

The talented Euphoria ensemble also includes Eric Dane, Maude Apatow, Storm Reid, and Sydney Sweeney.

Euphoria airs at 9.30pm Mondays on Fox Showcase and On Demand.
